Built on a belief that a campus of 8,000 students should never need to buy new.

The Claremont Colleges generate an extraordinary amount of waste — not out of carelessness, but out of necessity. Students arrive, furnish their rooms, stock their shelves. Four years later, or sometimes just one, they leave. And the cycle starts again.

The result is predictable: every move-out season, dumpsters overflow with furniture, textbooks, electronics, and clothing in perfectly usable condition. Items that took resources to produce, shipped across the country, discarded within walking distance of the next student who needs them.

5C Exchange exists to interrupt that cycle. Not through guilt, not through obligation — but by making the sustainable choice the obvious one. If selling your desk to a rising sophomore two quads over is easier than dragging it to the dumpster, most people will sell it.

That is the entire premise. A marketplace frictionless enough that reuse becomes the default — and waste becomes the inconvenient alternative.

I

Keep goods in circulation

Every item that stays on campus is one less item manufactured, packaged, and shipped to replace it.

II

Reduce student cost of living

Buying second-hand from a peer two buildings away is better for your budget and for the planet. Both matter.

III

Strengthen the campus community

Every exchange is a connection between students who might otherwise never cross paths across the five campuses.

The most sustainable product is the one that already exists.

5C Exchange is our contribution to making that product findable, affordable, and accessible — for every student, on every campus, every semester.
